SUMO WRESTLING – RUNNING OF THE
GAME
- Have 4 reliable adult spotters available during the running
of this game.
- Have competitors remove their shoes. Lay the suits out
on the mat, face down for entry.
- Have the competitors lie down and wriggle into the suits.
ON NO OCCASION SHOULD A PARTICIPANT STAND THE SUIT UP TO GET
INTO IT.
- Have the participants roll onto their backs and bend their
legs. Holding them by the hands (held out in front of
them), help them to stand up. Put their head-gear on for
them, making sure the neck strap is on.
- Go over the rules with the participants:
“There are three main rules that absolutely MUST be
kept. First, keep your hands in a fist at all times.
DO NOT grab the fabric of the suit, as this will tear them.
Second, no head-butting is permitted. Finally, if you
step out of the ring, stop wrestling IMMEDIATELY and come
back into the ring. We will restart the round.
Participants get a point by either pushing their opponent
out of the ring, or by wrestling their opponent to the ground.”
- Participants stand facing each other at the beginning of a
round. Have them “scare away the evil spirits,”
by stomping their feet and yelling their best Japanese word
(teriyaki or sushi are good suggestions if they cannot think
of any words to yell). Doing this raises the energy level
of the crowd and encourages audience interaction. THIS
IS ONLY IF THE PRACTICE OF “SCARING AWAY THE EVIL SPIRITS”
IS NOT GOING TO BE OFFENSIVE TO THE GROUP.
- Allow the wrestlers to begin. They should never grab
the latex skin of the suits or grab the “diapers”.
Both of these behaviors will damage the suits. A point
is scored when one wrestler steps out of the ring or when one
wrestler falls or is wrestled to the ground. If the point
is gained by falling or being wrestled to the ground, make sure
the “loser” is okay. If he or she is alright,
allow the victor to fall onto his victim – this is a great
crowd pleaser.
- Typically, wrestlers go for a “best of three”
scoring system. Do not allow a match to run longer than
this. Fatigued players are likely to injure themselves.
- CONTROL OF THE MATCH IS IMPORTANT AT ALL TIMES – THIS
IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS EVENT AND MUST BE RUN CAREFULLY.
- All contestants must be in good health. Persons with
back, neck, knee or joint injury, respiratory problems or who
may be pregnant should not participate. Do not allow people
to use the game when attendant is not present.
IF ANYONE DOES NOT WANT TO OBEY THE RULES, DO NOT LET THEM USE THE
EQUIPMENT. YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL SOMEONE TO LEAVE
THE EVENT.
